Abstract

Ritual acts aimed at protection from mice are known in practically all cultures, and in certain areas, that could be to a larger extent in danger of the rodent pest, a more extensive presence of ‘mice rites’ may be expected. One of such zones is the central Balkans, where obvious evidence on a more expressive cult role of a mouse is present – the existence of particular mouse holidays and the tabooization of the mouse name, which could point to the cult having deeper, ancient Balkan roots.
