Abstract
Byzantine Brumalia and Contemporary Masked Processions of Balkan Peoples
The Byzantine Brumalia and the modern masked processions of the Balkan peoples have not been so far studied in ethnology. The Byzantine documents offer interesting data concerning the Brumalia in the Balkan areas throughout the centuries. In addition to these historical sources, which allow us to conceive the picture of these popular festivities, the author founds his paper also on the recent ethnographic-folkloric materials of contemporary Balkan peoples, recorded chiefly in the course of the 19th and 20th centuries. The author utilized, moreover, also the materials he had collected himself in the field, as well as the data from the rich scientific literature on the masked processions in general.
