Abstract

The distribution of power in Europe was essentialy changed by the regulations of the peace treaty concluded in Paris in 1856. The great powers collectively guaranteed the privileges of the Principality of Serbia. This made the position of Serbia safer, up to a certain degree, because Russian influence was limited, but at the same time this provided the possibility for other great powers to become involved in relations between Serbia and Turkey. One of the creators od the system of 1856, England, was very interested in maintaining that system by keeping the territorial integrity of the Ottoman Empire.
